The role is based within a prison setting overseeing and supervising prisoners with 2 months – 2 years left of their sentence. 

As Laundry & Sewing Industries Shift Manager will ensure production targets and quality standards are met while fostering a safe, supportive, and rehabilitative work environment.

This role will also involve working closely with other prison staff and Work & Skills Coaches to support prisoner’s employability development.

A suitable candidate sewing and/or textiles background, to manage the daily operations of the laundry and sewing workshop, overseeing a team of up to 35 prisoners. This role focuses on delivering practical skills, fostering a structured and safe work environment, and supporting prisoners in developing work-related competencies through the Employability Passport program, in partnership with Work & Skills Coaches. As an Industry Instructor, you will play a key role in preparing individuals for future employment, promoting restorative practices, and ensuring the smooth running of the laundry and sewing operations.

Key Responsibility

  • Supervise and Manage the Workspace: Oversee daily operations in the laundry and sewing workshop, managing tasks such as sorting, washing, drying, ironing, and repairing prison-issued clothing and textiles.
  • Motivate and Develop Prisoners: Provide guidance and support to prisoners, encouraging skill development and accountability through hands-on tasks and constructive feedback.
  • Set Work Schedules and Manage Targets: Create and manage daily work schedules, setting realistic targets and ensuring quality standards to meet the needs of the prison.
  • Inventory and Stock Management: Monitor and manage inventory levels for laundry and sewing supplies, estimating usage needs and coordinating with procurement to ensure adequate stock is maintained.
  • Restorative Practices: Apply restorative practices within the workshop, promoting accountability, conflict resolution, and self-reflection to support each learner’s rehabilitation journey.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Perform health and safety assessments for all horticulture activities, ensuring compliance with safety standards in the use of tools, machinery, and consumables.
  • Tool and Equipment Safety: Maintain strict control and accountability of all tools and materials used, ensuring compliance with the Local Security Strategy (LSS) and health and safety regulations
  • Prisoner Reporting: Provide relevant information for prisoner reports, including parole, sentence planning, ACCT, and Security Information Reports (SIRs), to contribute to prisoner evaluations and case management.
  • Maintain Attendance Records and Monitor Hours Worked: Log prisoner attendance, approve hours worked, and track productivity to ensure workshop operations align with program goals.
  • Collaboration with Prison Staff: Work collaboratively with other prison staff, including the Work & Skills Coaches, custodial staff, and case managers, to monitor prisoner progress and align individual development with overall rehabilitation goals and Employability Passport.
  • Health and Safety Risk Assessments: Participate in risk assessments, identifying and addressing hazards associated with horticultural activities and ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Material Management: Request and manage resources, estimating usage and maintaining stock levels to meet training demands effectively.
  • Contract Delivery Indicators (CDI) and Self-Audit: Participate in self-audit processes and contribute towards achieving CDIs, upholding high standards of training delivery.
  • Administrative Support: Manage administrative tasks related to the workshop, maintaining accurate and timely records as required by local agreements.
  • Meetings and Communication: Engage in regular communication with prison management and other stakeholders, contributing to meetings focused on health, safety, and security protocols.
  • Incident and Security Reporting: Complete required incident reports, such as Violence Reduction Incident Reports (VRIRs) and Security Information Reports (SIRs) and contribute to Incentive Earned Privileges (IEP) documentation when needed.
  • Tool Security and Command Mode: Ensure strict compliance with tool security, especially in emergencies, following the National Security Framework (NSF).

As Horticulture Industries Instructor will ensure production targets and quality standards are met while fostering a safe, supportive, and rehabilitative work environment.

This role will also involve working closely with other prison staff and Work & Skills Coaches to support prisoner’s employability development.

You will lead vocational training in horticulture for up to 24 learners, delivering Level 1 NOCN and Level 2 City & Guilds qualifications. This role involves equipping prisoners with practical and theoretical horticultural skills, with a strong focus on sustainability. 

Key Responsibility 

  • Deliver Horticulture Qualifications: Teach Level 1 NOCN and Level 2 City & Guilds qualifications in horticulture, covering fundamental and advanced concepts and practices in gardening, plant care, and sustainability.
  • Promote Sustainability: Integrate sustainable practices into training by teaching recycling, water conservation, soil health, and organic growing methods to instill environmental awareness and responsibility.
  • Tailor Learning to Individual Needs: Utilise Individual Support Plans to adapt training to each prisoner’s specific needs, incorporating accommodations and modifications to support their progress and success.
  • Set Work Schedules and Manage Targets: Develop and oversee work schedules for prisoners, setting measurable goals and standards to ensure training and contractual targets are met efficiently.
  • Supervise and Motivate Prisoners: Oversee and motivate prisoners in the horticulture workshop, ensuring a safe, productive, and positive learning environment that fosters growth, discipline, and engagement.
  • Restorative Practices: Apply restorative practices within the workshop, promoting accountability, conflict resolution, and self-reflection to support each learner’s rehabilitation journey.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Perform health and safety assessments for all horticulture activities, ensuring compliance with safety standards in the use of tools, machinery, and consumables.
